SINGLR SALON
Is it an app? Is it an opera? It's an APPERA!!
Developed at the University of York, the world’s first contemporary music experimental voice APPERA (a cross between an app and an opera!) comes to the National Early Music Centre, York for one night only.
What kind of voice do you like? Low growly voices or high and pure? Are you a fan of a throaty husky sound or a voice as clear and sonorous as a bell? What would the outcome be, if we chose who to be with on the basis of the voice and vocal creativity rather that the usual perimeters of visual appearance, income, and what kind of pizza someone likes?
SINGLR is an opera where the stories presented onstage are the first meetings of participants, who took part in a specially created purely vocal dating app, called ‘SINGLR’
For the audience, ‘The SINGLR salon’ will be a fabulous dreamlike musical evening where ambient electronic tracks and live musicians accompany the vocalised conversations of the SINGLR app participants.
Be a part of SINGLR!!!
SINGLR is an opera, where stories are generated by participants meeting via a specially coded dating app, the only perimeter of the dating profile uploaded being the voice.
All you have to do is head to SINGLR.org, follow the instructions to register and you will be able to find the voice match of your dreams!
You will be asked to upload a profile 'pic' which is a sample of your voice. No actual pics are required, in fact no other information at all is uploaded!
You will then be sent voice matches and once you hear a voice that appeals to you, you can then communicate with that voice, (only in vocalisations) as much as you like…

Exploring the Importance of story making: THAT
Story making is a skill, one that lives within all of us. Inspired by Tabitha Grove’s new one woman show, Them There Then That, Tabitha will be running informal, friendly two-hour sessions each prompted by one of the title words - Them, There, Then or That. Come to a session (or four!) and you will look at ways of choosing, molding, structuring, and communicating short stories, there’ll be a chance to share your story too, if you like (no pressure!).
Think of this as a supportive and creative space in which to start cultivating those long held stories.
Inspired by Kate Atkinson's Behind the Scenes at the Museum, Them There Then That is a brand new solo performance touring York Libraries this October as part of the Big City Read.

Potatohead
A starch raving mad adaptation of Faustus… with puppets!
Potatohead is a hilariously bizarre solo show and adaptation of Doctor Faustus and the Seven Deadly Sins.
An original piece of new writing by puppeteer and performer Freddie Hayes. Directed by Sh!t Theatre.
Saturated with potato puns from start to finish, Potatohead tells the story of a humble spud who dreams of becoming a cabaret superstar. But how does a couch potato grow to become a golden wonder? With elements of kitsch cabaret and old school entertainment, this original new writing blends puppetry, clowning and comedy for a highly entertaining and joyful performance. Potatohead is an unadulterated celebration of silliness.
The creation of Potatohead has been funded through Arts Council England, Slap York, Folkestone Puppet Festival and Creative Live Arts Yorkshire.
Potatohead includes some sexual content and references to religion and the devil. It is suitable as a 14+ age rating.

9 moments is an experimental performance curated by students on the MA Dance and Creative Enterprise course at NSCD.
This immersive event celebrates different moments in time. Moments of growth, connection, emptiness, sharing. Moments that are ever–changing.
At times, the audience will find themselves as witnesses and at times they will be the co-creators.
Bringing together a diverse, international cohort, the students collectively draw on their socio-cultural experiences to create a captivating evening of new work.

11-4pm Monday 23 August-Friday 27 August.
Break for lunch 1-2pm (Lunch not provided).
Inspired by the exhibition, Young Gainsborough: Rediscovered Landscape Drawings- in collaboration with the Royal collection Trust, National Gallery of Ireland, Dublin and Nottingham Castle- this year’s Teenage Art School (TAS) explores how artists respond to place, combining AI, text and image to produce statements about our lived environments.
We are excited to be working with varied practitioners over 5 days in August, with a dedicated workshop day led by Jade Montserrat, who will be exhibiting work alongside TAS. Jade is a research-led artist and writer based in Scarborough. She makes visual and live artworks that explore place, the vulnerabilities of bodies and the tactile and sensory qualities of language.
As Practically Creative, artist and engineer duo, Laura Robertson and Jared Holden blend their combined knowledge of Art and engineering to produce installations with an AI twist. Be guided by these artists and artist-producer Sas Yates to work creatively with collage, photography, drawing and AI, developing contemporary work for an exhibition at York Art Gallery from 1stOctober.
There is also the potential to gain Bronze Arts Award. This is a five day course for 11 to 17 year olds. Whether art is just a hobby or something you are studying (or planning to study) at GCSE or A level, Teenage Art School will help you develop your skills as an artist.
Contact Sarah.Yates@ymt.org.uk for more details and to book your place.
